Mariam's World of Silent Movement

Mariam Khan is a young artist fascinated by the movement of water, whether a vast expanse of sea or patterns describing raindrops falling in the poll. The inspiration from elements of nature has been a common factor of artists throughout the history and described by them in an individual style.

Marium did her master’s in Fine Arts from Indus Valley School of Arts in 1998. What makes this young artist’s achievements even more special is the fact that despite loosing her hearing at her age of 2, she has been a brilliant student throughout her entire academic career. She clinched first position in the SSC examination 1994. A true artist at heart, she works with a real passion and devotion that gives her painting a vibrant and unique touch. Marium’s forte lies in oils, pastels and water colors. Her work has earned her letters pf appreciation from various organizations and eminent personalities from around the world.

During her final year at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 1988, Mariam based her thesis work on the varied aspects of water inspired by myriad patterns formed by the changing environment of the school during a season of rain. Since then she has shown her paintings in several solo exhibitions where they reflect her feelings for nature. In the world of her imagination plant-life flourishes and animals roam free reflected in crystalline streams.

At a recent display of art work shown at a venue known as Artistic Furniture in Zamzama, several still life compositions of flowers and object d’art shared with the observer their significance perceived through the artist’s vision. Creating a world of unspoiled nature and perfect interiors portrays the world. as it ideally should be rather than as it is. These paintings reveal a wistful phase of painter while another facet of her aesthetic adventure is found in collection that refers to her interests in tradition and classic art. In this mood paintings based on the works of miniature paintings and traditions of old masters engage Mariam’s artistic endeavors. Working with watercolor she strives to reproduce work of a past era as an exercise in discipline, detailing the work with care. Larger pieces are sometimes rearranged and manipulated by changing the original colors and replacing them with hues that please her aesthetic taste.
